Wade Miley scores a game with no points or hits

(Cleveland) Wade Miley started the fourth game with no runs or hits of the season, leading the Cincinnati Reds to a 3-0 win over the Cleveland Indians on Friday night.

Miley (4-2) relied on her effect balls and her experience in major baseball to muzzle the Indians and pull off the Reds’ first scoring or hitting game since Homer Bailey in 2013.

“It seems so far-fetched to me,” said the 34-year-old pitcher. I am speechless. I still haven’t realized what I just accomplished. ”

It was a second game with no runs or hits in three days and the Indians suffered the feat for the second time in a month.

Miley had to wait 83 minutes before he could make a first pitch in this game, due to a rain delay, and he followed in the footsteps of Baltimore Orioles starter John Means, who hit the Mariners in Seattle Wednesday.

Joe Musgrove had the first scoreless game in San Diego Padres history on April 9, and five days later Carlos Rodón of the Chicago White Sox gave the Indians nothing, missing out. the perfect match when he hit a batter in the ninth inning.

There haven’t been four scoring and hitting games so early in a season since 1917. So it’s no surprise that the collective batting average in the Majors this season is only , 233, which constitutes a record of mediocrity.

The Indians became the 16e history team to be the victim of a game without a point or a hit twice in the same season. The Mariners achieved this unenviable feat in 2019.

Miley walked a walk and he passed eight opponents in the mitt on 114 shots.

“He gave a baseball clinic. He has thrown us off balance, ”observed Indians manager Terry Francona.

One of the team’s most popular players, Miley mentioned that the zeros piling up on the scoreboard quickly made him lonely in the Reds dugout.

“All my friends have left me,” he laughed. I do not like it. I don’t like to think about throwing. I want to talk about other things. There was no one to talk to anymore. ”

While Miley shutout the Indians, Zach Plesac played the same trick on the Reds for eight innings, until the Cincinnati side scored three runs in the ninth.

The Reds hit two singles at the expense of stopper Emmanuel Clase (2-1) and the latter made a mistake. Clase then committed an illegal feint which pushed a player to the plate.

Mike Moustakas followed with a one-run single to give the Reds a 3-0 lead. Taking advantage of this cushion, Miley retired René Rivera on a candle before removing César Hernández on holds and Jordan Luplow on a ground.

“I will never forget that moment,” insisted Reds manager David Bell. I’ll never forget the look in Wade’s eyes. I am so proud that he enjoys every moment. ”

Miley was only 1-4 in eight career starts against the Indians, who maintain a collective average of .213 this season.

It was the 17e Reds scoring and hitting game since 1892.

“For something like that to happen, I’m speechless,” Miley said.
