(Paris) The fourth generation of the Toyota Yaris was named European Car of the Year on Monday, succeeding the Peugeot 208, during a ceremony broadcast online.

The hybrid city car manufactured in Valenciennes (northern France) was ahead of the Fiat 500, the Cupra Formentor, the Volkswagen ID.3, the Skoda Octavia, the Land Rover Defender and the Citroën C4 in the final.

This prestigious award was given to it when Toyota withdrew the Yaris from the North American market.

The first generation of the Japanese car had already won the election in 2000, prized for its design, modular cabin and small engine.

The Yaris sold 193,050 units in Europe in 2020 (3e and 4e generations combined). Toyota has produced more than four million at the Onnaing-Valenciennes site since it opened in 2001.

The car of the year 2021 was chosen by a jury of 59 specialist journalists from 22 European countries. This prize has been awarded annually since 1964.
