Cycling | Julian Alaphilippe renounces the Tokyo Games

(Paris) The French Julian Alaphilippe, reigning world champion, announced on social networks on Friday that he would not participate in the Olympic Games where he appeared as one of the favorites of the online road cycling event.

“It’s a personal and well-considered decision. End-of-season objectives have been defined and in this sense choices must be made. I would be very proud to wear the France team jersey for the next World Championships, ”Belgian team rider Deceuninck-Quick Step wrote on Twitter and Instagram.

Julian Alaphilippe’s decision is the first defection of a leading rider from the Olympic men’s road cycling road race which is scheduled for July 24, less than a week after the arrival of the Tour de France in Paris.

The World Cycling Championships are organized in September in Flanders, almost two months after the Olympic Games.

Alaphilippe’s announcement comes just after the extension of the state of emergency in Japan facing an upsurge in the coronavirus pandemic.

A petition calling for the cancellation of the Olympic Games, which has collected more than 350,000 signatures, was handed over to local authorities in Tokyo on Friday. It was also sent to the IOC in particular and should be submitted to the Japanese government.
