Antony Blinken confirmed by Senate as US Secretary of State

(Washington) The United States Senate on Tuesday confirmed by a large majority the appointment of Antony Blinken as head of American diplomacy, six days after the arrival of Joe Biden at the White House.

The new Secretary of State won 78 votes in favor, against 22, a much more comfortable majority than his Republican predecessors Rex Tillerson and Mike Pompeo (confirmed with 56 and 57 votes in favor, respectively).

Many Republicans therefore voted in favor of Antony Blinken.

The leader of the Republican senators on the Foreign Affairs Committee, Jim Risch, underlined before the vote his disagreement about the return of the United States to the Iranian nuclear agreement, wanted by the new Democratic president and his minister .

But beyond this thorny issue, “on the many subjects we discussed, there were few differences, if at all, between us on several of them”, recognized the elected. , who voted in favor of “Tony” Blinken.

“We need a secretary of state. This is the right person, ”he pleaded.

The leader of the Democratic majority in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, also felt that Antony Blinken was “the right person to reinforce America’s prerogatives on the world stage”.

“For four years, Donald Trump weakened our alliances, emboldened our adversaries and tarnished America’s reputation abroad. We must reaffirm our commitment to NATO and to other alliances around the world, ”he said.

Antony Blinken had promised, during his hearing before the senators last week, to “reinvigorate” the alliances abused by the former Republican president, and to bring the United States “to the front line” after unilateralism and disengagement of Trumpist diplomacy.

He also drew the approval of many Republicans when he admitted that Donald Trump was “right to take a firmer stance against China.”
